Hike the Limes
Hike in the footsteps of the Ancient Romans. The Limes UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site is the former wall defining the border between the Roman Empire and the Teutonic fiefdoms and runs straight across Hofgut Georgenthal. Immerse yourself in the history of the Romans, get to know the countryside here, and experience a really unique hike. Led by an expert trained guide who knows all about the Limes, the approx. five-kilometre hike takes you right around the Hofgut. And you’ll meet “genuine” contemporary witnesses: Lea, the spice seller will tell you what the soldiers traded with the civilians in the old castle village and what coinage was used. There were ancient ceramics, for example, which were very valuable, and exotic fruits… Urus Treverus, a Roman legionnaire, will tell you all about everyday life as a soldier on duty guarding the Limes. The hike around the Hofgut takes about 90 minutes and is suitable for 5-25 people. Remember to bring your hiking boots!
