Look back into Roman everyday life – valuable exhibits as well as explanatory photos on the use of the pieces 2000 years ago are waiting for you. The regional museum “Limes im Hofgut” is a small but fine museum that we have set up to provide our guests and other visitors with a lot of interesting information about the former border of the Roman Empire.
It tells the stories of Roman knights with their shields and swords. Hofgut Georgenthal is located next to the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Limes”. We invite you to join us on a journey through ancient world history next to our Hofgut with texts, maps, pictures, findings and interior design. 2000 years ago, the Mediterranean world ended here.

After restoration: new splendour inside the Limes Museum

We present Roman metal findings from the Alteburg fort near Heftrich in new splendour, newly restored in June 2019: a bronze jug as well as a lamp and a small bell made out of iron tell of everyday life at the Limes. The equipment of Roman soldiers included shields with shield bosses on the outside, which protected the hand of the shield bearer. The fragment of such a shield boss also belongs to the findings from the Alteburg. There is also a picture bowl made of terra sigillata on which such a shield can be watched being used in a battle. If you dare to take a closer look, you will even learn the name of the ancient potter Belsus, who has immortalised himself with his own stamp on the bowl. Belsus worked in the pottery manufactory of Rheinzabern on the Rhine between 170 and 220 AD.
